M.Tech Admission — July 2026
The Department of AI at IIT Hyderabad accepts applications for M.Tech (2-year and 3-year) programs. Approximately 30 faculty members are affiliated with the AI department.
📢 Announcements
- •Offers for MTech (SS) and MTech (RA) candidates will be made shortly.
- •Written exam (offline) scheduled for M.Tech RA and SS programs on Thursday, 7th May 2026 — interviews in online mode, May 11–13, 2026.
- •Shortlisted candidates for the written test must carry: GATE score card (if applicable), consolidated CGPA certificate, category certificate (if applicable), and valid photo ID.
- •Written test syllabus: Mathematical foundations (Linear Algebra, Probability, Calculus, Discrete Maths), programming/algorithmic basics, general AI/ML knowledge, and logical reasoning.
Overview
The Department of AI seeks talented and dedicated M.Tech students to develop highly skilled human resources who can contribute to modern, cutting-edge research and industrial demand in AI. Students have access to excellent laboratory facilities with state-of-the-art software, hardware, and internet connectivity.

Research Areas
M.Tech (3-Year) Program — Research Assistantship
The 3-year M.Tech program has the same number of credits as the 2-year program but is more spread out to enable students to focus more on research. Students are assigned a supervisor at time of joining and may receive a stipend similar to or higher than 2-year M.Tech students.
Coursework — 24+2 credits
Theory and practice, English communication, industry lectures. Holistic introduction to ML theory and application.
Thesis — 24 credits
Research contribution with supervisor(s) towards high-quality AI research.
Admission Modes
- →Mode RA1: Valid GATE score in CS / EC / EE / DA / MA
- →Mode RA2: Full-time BTech/BE from any IIT with CGPA ≥ 8 (GATE not mandatory)
- →Mode RA3: BTech/BE + 6 months of project experience at IITH (GATE not mandatory)
M.Tech (2-Year) Program — Three Options
1. MTech (2-year, TA) — Teaching Assistantship
Students are paid a stipend (as per MoE norms) for 8 hrs/week of TA service — exam invigilation, supervising undergrad labs, and course assistance.
Admission Modes
- →Mode TA1 (COAP): Valid GATE score in CS/EC/EE/DA/MA — admission typically through COAP
- →Mode TA2: Full-time BTech/BE from any IIT, CGPA ≥ 8 (GATE not mandatory)
2. MTech (2-year, Self-Sponsored)
Non-subsidized program — no fellowship even for GATE-qualified students. GATE not mandatory. Identical curriculum and degree to TA-funded candidates. Eligible for on-campus placement.
- →Open to degree holders with first class and CGPA ≥ 7.0
- →Admission via written test + interview
- →No conversion to MTech (TA) or MTech (RA) is possible
3. MTech (2-year, Govt Lab / Public Sector Sponsored)
For sponsored candidates from government laboratories or public sector organisations. Admission involves shortlisting followed by a written test or interview.
